Handmade Christmas

Sometime in the Summer I decided that I was going to make all of my Christmas presents.  That doesn't mean that I got an early start on it.  It just means I started thinking about it.  :)

A lot of my gift were actually made at Thanksgiving, with my sister.    The rest I finished up at home over the next few weeks and I finished around December 10th.  I even had them wrapped up and ready to go.  That is way ahead of schedule for me and I can't believe how much less stressful that was!

Now that all of these have gone out to the recipients, I can share some of the things I made.

Last year Lisa turned me on to canning, and I made some strawberry jam to give  out.  It was  so yummy!  This year I wanted to try something different and Lisa suggested Salsa.  I love that idea so she showed me how to do it at Thanksgiving.  So easy!!

Lisa and I made 8 or 9 jars at Thanksgiving and then I spent one  weekend making more, once I realized all of the people I wanted to give out it.

The other cool gift idea I made (again, that Lisa came up with), was homemade lavender sugar scrub.

This was also ridiculously easy to make.  This is one of my favorite products at Bath and Body Works, so I was so excited to be able to make it at home.  I kept a jar (or two) for myself.

Lisa even found those cool jars online to put it into.  If not for Lisa, no one would be getting anything this year.  I got all of my ideas from her.  :)

Lastly, I made these pretty necklaces.  I learned how to make them at the Scrapbook Expo we went to in September.  They were so cute and easy I knew I wanted to make some as gifts.

I made some Christmas ones and some non-Christmas

This one I made for a friend who is anxiously awaiting
                                                        travel for  their little girl
This was my most favorite one to make  :)

                                                                           The back

I decorated these cute tins to put them in:

Here are some of the gifts ready to be packaged

Ready to deliver!  My favorite part.

I even picked up these cute cards at Michael's in the dollar bin to include with them.

I found this awesome blog that has the cutest handmade gift ideas.  I'm a making some of those things for sure next year.     Check out this post.   Mmmmmmmmmmm.

And also this one.  So cute!  At the bottom are a ton of links to lots of handmade gifts.

Did anyone else make anything for gifts this year?  Please share!  I'm always looking for new ideas.

These dreams

Scrambled eggs atop hot buttered toast. That's what I was craving for breakfast the moment I woke up this morning.

It's what my mom always made for me when I was home sick.

I wasn't craving that particular breakfast item because I am sick(I am not), nor because I was feeling nostalgic (which I haven't been).

I think I was craving it because  I dreamt of my Mom last night.  This is unusual for me.  I have not had a dream about my mom in 14 years, since shortly after she died.  Those dreams always consisted of me hearing her voice in the distance and frantically looking for, but never quite able to reach her. In fact she was never actually physically *in* those dreams.  Only her voice and her implied presence somewhere out there, beyond my reach.

My mom has been gone a long time.  I don't miss her or think about her every single day.  I mean I do miss her, but it isn't constantly there, that deep longing that I used to have, as I tried to navigate my way through grief for several years after she died.

It is unusual that I dreamt of her.

It was a short dream, and very surreal(as most dreams are I suppose).  Surreal in the way that we were in my house,( a cozy cottage) sitting at our kitchen table, and I was making her breakfast.  I live in a small one bedroom apartment, and we don't have a kitchen table, and that was partly what made the dream seem surreal to me.  Not the fact that my Mom, who is dead, was sitting there with me.  That part seemed perfectly normal.  Such is the strangeness of dreams I guess.

She was sitting at my kitchen table, and I was making breakfast(which was, you guessed it, scrambled eggs on toast) and she was asking me all kinds of questions.  It didn't feel to me like she had been dead and come back to life, but rather that she had gone away for a long period of time.  She had been gone, for some unknown reason, and now she was back for a short period of time and she was asking me questions hurriedly, in a rapid fire manner as though she had 14 years worth of questions to catch up on and only a short while to gain the answers.

What did I do for  a living?  Did I still work with children?
What about Joe?  Did he ever find a full time position as a professor?
How was Dad? And my brother?  My sister?  How are the kids?  (Why she didn't know how my Dad and brother were but she knew Lisa had kids struck me as odd).
How are Joe's parents?

I don't remember answering any of her questions.  I stood at the stove and stirred the scrambled eggs.  Occasionally I would look over at her and smile, but say nothing and continue stirring.

Then came the question that caused me to cringe.

"How come you never gave me a grandchild"?

I stood there in silence.  Stunned.  Struggling to find the words to explain the last 10 years of our lives.  As I grappled with the words to try and make her understand, I turned from the stove to face her but she was gone.  I felt panicked.  I had to find her. I had to explain.  I looked frantically for her but she wasn't there.

And then I woke up.  At first the dream was fuzzy.  Somewhere in my subconscious.  I got up to go to the bathroom and struggled to remember the details of the dream.  As I slipped back into bed(it was only four a.m.) and drifted back to sleep the dream got away from me and I couldn't remember exactly what is was about.  It wasn't until I woke up several hours later that the whole thing came back to me and I hurried to write it down.

It really brought up a lot of old feelings for me.

Christmas is hard when you don't have kids.  Well it's hard for people who don't have kids who want to have them.  Maybe it's not hard for people who never imagined  children a part of their lives. I don't know.  But I do know that I am not alone in saying that Christmas can be hard for those of us longing to have a little one to share it with.

I think it is especially hard for us this year because this is the first year ever that we aren't thinking "Maybe next year will be the Christmas we have our child home with us."  For the last 10 years we have been secretly wishing that next year would be the year.  In the first 5 years it was the hope that we would become pregnant and be able to share that joy at Christmas time.  The next 5 years were spent dreaming of a child in a country far away and if we could just hang on a little while longer then surely she will be home next year.

This year feels different.  I don't have that hope that next year will be the year because I honestly don't know if there ever will be a year that we celebrate with our child.

Maybe it will always just be the two of us.

And maybe one year it will feel like that's enough for both of us.

Just not this year.

I have so much to be thankful for.

My family is healthy.
We have a roof over our heads.
I have the best friends.

I don't mean to sound like I'm not grateful for what I have.  I am.  But that longing in the back of my heart that I do my best to push down sometimes rears it's head, especially at Christmastime.

Later today I am going to Target to spend my gift cards on something for ME, then Joe and I are going to go for a walk in the rain and watch a Christmas movie later.

This sadness will pass and I will feel silly for even writing this post in the first place.

It's strange the feelings that a simple dream can dredge up.

There's something out there

I can't resist
I need to hide away from the pain
There's something out there
I can't resist
The sweetest song is silence
That I've ever heard
Funny how your feet
In dreams never touch the earth
In a wood full of princes
Freedom is a kiss
But the prince hides his face
From dreams in the mist

These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away

Thankful Thursday

I am thankful for the friends I have made online.  Some of them I have gotten to meet in person, and others I haven't.  This week alone, two online friends who I have never met have shown me such kindness that both brought me to tears.  I can't believe how lucky I am to have such wonderful friends!

I am thankful for Christmas cards.  I'm not sending any out this year, but I put it out on FB that I would LOVE to receive some (yes, I begged for Christmas cards on FB.  I have no shame  :)  Anyway, they have been coming in the mail every day and I LOVE them.  I love receiving them.  I love going to the mail and getting them.  And I love putting them up on the back of our front door so I can look at them whenever I walk by. Thanks to everyone who sent me one.  I love them!

I loved the weather we had over the weekend.  It hit almost 85 at my house on Sunday.  At first I was not too happy to have such high temps in December, but then Joe and I decided to go to the beach and watch the sun set and when we got there it was warm and so beautiful.  What a nice treat to have that kind of beach weather in December.  Now it has cooled down again and I am grateful for that too.  It will be nice to have some cold(er) weather for Christmas.

Here are some pictures from our trip to the beach on Sunday.  Seriously the weather couldn't have been more beautiful.
They had these leggings in the window of one of the stores.
I wonder I I could pull them off?  Probably not.
The credit for this picture goes to Joe.  I didn't want to do it and complained the whole time.  I had to eat crow after I saw it and admit it turned out kind of cool.  I hate it when that happens.
The sunset was stunning!

Joe writing in the sand

What he was writing.  Awwwwwwwwww

I can't believe Christmas is only 9 days away.  I probably say that every year but seriously!
I can't believe it!

Keep Calm And........

You have all seen those posters that say:
I was doing a web search for them and came across a ton of parodies of them.  Some of them are cute:
Or if you want more breed specific:

Some of them are funny:

But these are the ones I love the most:

And perfect for Christmas with the family:

Heh.

For That Hard to Buy for Person on Your List

How funny/cool are some of these kitchen gadgets?

I think my favorites are the banana holder and the Eiffel Tower cheese grater.  The candle forks are a close third.

Saw the all HERE

It's going to be very warm here today so we are going to go walk around Laguna Beach.  Truth be told, I am jealous of the billion friends I have on FB posting about snow.  I don't like 80 degrees temps in December and I love snow.  I would love to be curled up in bed while the snow fell outside.  As long as it stopped by the time I had to go to work in the morning.   :)

Things Annoying Me Right Now

My back. The back injury that I sustained 7 months ago is still not healed and it’s causing me pain almost every single day. I did something to aggravate it over Thanksgiving (riding bikes with the kids? Playing dodge ball? Throwing a football? Sleeping on an air mattress? Who knows)? I have been lying flat on my back almost every day when I get home from work and it’s getting old. Plus I have had to go back to wearing my brace again during the day and it is a pain.

Our radio station at work that started playing Christmas music a full week before Thanksgiving. A week! Before! Thanksgiving! We couldn’t handle it so we switched over to a Jazz station. Now I usually enjoy Jazz but for some reason listening to it 8 hours a day drives me insane. If our usual radio station was normal and waited until a reasonable time before Christmas to switch over to all-Christmas-all-the-time, then we wouldn’t have to listen to the Jazz station all day.

The new tire on our car that was flat during our trip over Thanksgiving. Joe took it back and they supposedly fixed it. Well this morning when we got in the car to go to work the tire was completely flat again. We took it to the gas station to fill it up until we could return it (yet again), but it wouldn’t hold any air. So we had to change the tire back to the spare (again) and I was late for work. They better fix it right this time or I’m going to lose it.

My husband not having a job. I. Am. So. Over it.

The new FB profile page. It’s my fault, because I chose to upgrade before FB forced me to, but I really don’t like it. Probably because I just don’t like change.

My dog. She has decided that she doesn’t like walking on wet (cold) grass to do her business, so she has been using our patio instead. When we lived downstairs I could just get the hose and wash if off but now that we live upstairs I have to clean it up with paper towels and a bowl of soapy water, all the while being careful not to let the water drip down onto our downstairs neighbor’s patio. It is gross.

What’s annoying you today?

Disneyland

I wasn't going to post this, because I have done a million posts about D-Land, but this is for you K.

Joe and I snuck off for a quick trip to Disneyland last night, just to look at the lights.  We stayed only for a couple of hours and since the parade was going on at the time, we walked right on 4 or 5 rides.  I assume it will only get more and more crowded the closer it gets to Christmas.

Right when we walked in the entrance, there was Mickey and there was no line at all so we stopped for a pic.

Small World is a must see at holiday time.

Haunted Mansion also a must see

And the castle is stunning

Attempt at a portrait in front of the castle.  Not so much.
Second attempt, but didn't realize until after that they had already "turned off"
the castle until the next ceremony.
Mmmmmmmmmmm

It was a fun time, and a nice middle of the week treat.
