A Bit of a Rant

A bit of a Rant

I’m in a foul mood today. Mondays sometimes do that to me.

Today there’s something more that it just being Monday that is attributing to my foul mood. I was listening to the radio on my way to work. They were talking about the big basketball game that was on last night.

*My* team won.

It is tradition that at the end of this big basketball game, the city holds a parade for the winning team. I get that. I really do. Everyone loves a parade, right? And it is quite exciting that *my* team won after 7 years.

Here’s the thing that’s got me peeved.

This parade? The one that’s a tradition?

It’s going to cost two million dollars to hold.

Two. Million. Dollars.

For a parade.

I understand that the winning basketball team has offered to pay for half of that amount.

That still leaves a price tag of one million dollars for the city to pick up.

How can the state of CA or the city of the winning team justify spending any amount of money on a parade when the state deficit is 24. 4 Billion dollars?

BILLION.

With a B.

Teachers in CA are being laid off by the thousands and schools are completely cutting out physical education and summer school classes due to this deficit.

State employees are being forced to take pay cuts and unpaid time off.

There is talk of closing some of our state parks.

In light of the current economic situation shouldn’t the city at least consider not having the parade?

At what point do we realize the economic crisis we are in now is a dire situation and sacrifices must be made?

Can somebody help me out here?

Because I’m having a hard time with this one.

Mondays. Sigh.

*When I say my team I am referring to the fact that I live in close proximity to where the winning team plays, not the fact that I was rooting for them.

That is insane!!! RRRRRRRRGGG... that frustrates me... really it does... I live in San Antonio.. I am not a fan of basketball but of course being from san antonio I know the lengths a city goes to for a stupid team but I have never heard of a 2 million dollar parade! And in this major economic crisis how can any one justify it??? I completely understand how you are feeling because really.. that is so ridiculous!!! How can any city official find that okay?

I agree - this is insane during this horrific economic times. There are many things going on in the world that shouldn't be right now - Too many loosing jobs, healthcare, loosing their retirment funds that were worked for for so many years... I'll stop now. I agree... total waste of money.
